The fifteen year career of D5170/25020 was spent allocated to only Eastern Region depots.
Final exhaust roof panel: flush. Allocations D5170 was new to Thornaby (51L) on December 29th 1961. Further transfers were:
December 1967 to Leeds Holbeck (55A). Renumbered March 1974. 25020 was the 7th Class 25 to be withdrawn. 25020 was stored serviceable on January 11th 1976 and withdrawn two weeks later as surplus to requirements. Upon withdrawal it was held at Barrow Hill from January 1976 until March 10th 1976 when it moved to Swindon Works with 25016 & 25017. It was broken up by the middle of August 1976. 1965 On the morning of June 13th noted at Shildon were D5164, D5170, D5171, D5173 & D5174.
1966 On the evening of April 16th D5154 & D5174 were stabled at Darlington whilst D5170 was passing light engine. On the evening of May 14th D5170 was stabled at Darlington shed.

1968 Condition April: green livery with small yellow warning panels, curved upper corners, warning panel covers frame level stripe, gangway doors fitted, valencing above batteries missing, blanking plates fitted, hand/footholds present, three-rung bogie mounted footsteps, ridge sided sandboxes, buffer beam mounted steam heat hose present On August 2nd D5170 worked the 22.00 Bradford - Huddersfield (or to somewhere else?).
1970
1973 On the afternoon of April 10th 5170 was stabled at York. On the evening of May 7th 5170 was stabled at York. At an unknown date (but believed to be after its release from Derby during August 1973 and its TOPS renumbering in March 1974), 5170 was noted at Derby Works with collision damage to the No.2 end bufferbeam and the valencing. On the morning of December 10th 5170 was stabled at York. On the morning of December 19th & 20th 5170 was stabled at York. On the morning of December 21st 5170 was the York permanent way pilot. Condition no date: blue/yellow livery, yellow paint covers gutter, gangway doors sheeted over, blanking plates fitted, hand/footholds plated over, bodyside valencing removed, three-rung bogie mounted footsteps, straight sided sandboxes, fuel tank fitted with a circular gauge.
1974 On the afternoon of May 3rd 25020 was stabled at York. On the evening of May 13th 25020 was stabled at York. On the morning of May 17th 25020 was one of the York permanent way pilots, later in the afternoon it was stabled at York. On June 26th 25020 was stabled at York. On the afternoon of September 9th 25020 was stabled at York. On the afternoon of October 16th 25020 was southbound at York with 13 vanfits. On the morning of November 1st 25020 was stabled at York. On the morning of November 8th 25020 was light engine at York.
1975 With its entire working life spent allocated to Eastern Region depots, and not being boiler equipped, 5170/25020 did not have the passenger train opportunities that were frequently presented to its LM allocated sisters. The only recorded passenger workings so far documented occurred late in its career during the summer of 1975. On June 7th 25020 workd the 07.18 Sheffield - Skegness and the return 10.55 Skegness - Sheffield. On the morning of June 24th 25018 & 25020 were stabled at York. On the afternoon of August 13th 25020 was stabled at York. On August 18th 25020 & 25136 worked 08.00 Walsall - Yarmouth to Norwich and returned with the 14.15 Yarmouth - Derby from Norwich. 25020 was noted at Tyne Yard on December 4th, being used on local workings.
