A platform-end view of 25230 at Birmingham New Street on March 31st 1984. The locomotive side presents a busy scene, the blanked-off boiler room grille, the plated over footstep/handholds, the side mounted boiler water tank filler access panel and the hinged battery isolating switch covers which are actually in place and in the closed position. To the right of the cab door at frame level is the fire warning instructions as applied by Glasgow Works (this instruction was later painted over). Not visible in this view is the non-standard ventilator (bottom row, extreme right), being smaller than the standard ventilator and with less grills.

The twenty two year career of D7580/25230 started and ended at LMR depots sandwiched between a fourteen year stint on the Scottish Region.

Dual brake equipped (at least by August 1968).
Non-standard Battery Isolating Switch Cover - three circular hinged discs (circa 1972)

7580 and an unidentified Scottish sister on the 1S06 19.30?? Euston - Stranraer, date and location unknown, but could well be seen here at Girvan. The Type 2s could have been on the train since Carlisle, or possibly added at Ayr.

1971
On March 26th a fire caused a power failure on the west side of Edinburgh Waverley, leading to many services using the suburban lines. The next day hand signalling at the west end was in place, but some services continued over the suburban lines to ease congestion. One such working was the 17.20 Edinburgh - Birmingham with 7580 & 7591. For reasons unknown 7580 was left at Slateford Yard which caused 7591 to struggle towards Carstairs, causing delays to itself and following trains.

On April 11th 7580 was noted at Edinburgh Waverley with passenger stock. The locomotive was in very shabby green livery with full yellow ends with gangway doors and retaining 'D' prefixes.

On December 10th 7580 failed at Acklington working an Edinburgh - Newcastle service, 6952 was used to drag everything to Newcastle.

1972
7580 was an occasional substitute for Class 27s on the high speed push-pull Glasgow - Edinburgh service, being noted on April 6th working the 12.30 Edinburgh - Glasgow Queen Street with 5407 and on September 6th working the 14.00 Edinburgh - Glasgow Queen Street with 5410.

On December 1st the 21.30 Glasgow Queen Street - Edinburgh failed behind 7578 & 5409, the train was pushed by 7580 & 5411 to its destination.

1973
On June 1st an Aberdeen - Edinburgh service was worked by 7580 & 5118.

Also of interest is three consecutive days workings on August 12th/13th/14th on the Edinburgh - Glasgow Queen Street route, all with 7581 as a push-pull type working, but presumably with both locomotives manned.

On the afternoon of September 8th 7580 was on empty coaching stock duty at Craigentinny.

1974
The 14.30 Glasgow Queen Street - Edinburgh push-pull service was worked by 7580 & 5396 on January 26th.

On May 11th 25230 worked the 1G07 Edinburgh - Dundee parcels - numbers on cabsides & non-standard grille on BIS side.

On the afternoon of October 30th 25230 was stabled at Haymarket.

On the morning of November 21st 25230 was on empty coaching stock duty at Craigentinny.

1976
On February 17th the 10.50 Nottingham - St Pancras was worked to Leicester by 45132 & 25230.

On August 1st 25230 & 25237 worked the 1N05 23.10 Edinburgh - Inverness.

On September 15th (?) the 16.18 Glasgow Queen Street - Fort William was worked by 25230.

1977
Heavy fog on December 19th seriously disrupted air travel in the south, with many flights diverted to Manchester and Prestwick. Seven specials were laid on to bring the air passengers south, including an afternoon Ayr – Euston extra which had 25082 & 25230 as far as Carlisle.

1978
A long distance railtour on June 3rd brought travellers from Spalding to Fort William. 25062 & 25230 took over the special from 47218 at Motherwell (also reported as Cowlairs) but got no further than Dumbarton Central where they were replaced by 25246 & 27029, with 25062 failed en-route at Bowling . Shortly before Crianlarich 25246 overheated and was declared a failure. 25232 which was travelling light engine southbound, was added at Crianlarich, 25246 was dumped on the Oban line and the train left for Fort William behind 25232 and 27029, arrival being over two hours late. The return leg utilised 25232 & 27029, with both having been carefully inspected at Fort William before being assigned to the return journey. However 25232 failed at Corrour and was dumped in the station. 27029 soldiered on to Bridge of Orchy where 27043 was transferred from a late running Glasgow Queen Street - Mallaig service, which had 37018 as the train locomotive. Despite all the problems the pair of Class 27s reached Cowlairs virtually on time, with 47218 returning the excursionists southbound.

25230 at Eastfield on June 28th 1978.

1979
On September 9th the 12.55 Glasgow Queen Street - Oban and the return late afternoon working were handled by 25230.

1980
On February 10th 25230 was noted ex-works on Eastfield depot.

On April 8th 25230 & 27004 worked the 10.44 Glasgow Queen Street - Dundee and the return 13.39 Dundee - Glasgow Queen Street. The 14.00 Glasgow Central - Carlisle was worked by 25230 on July 24th.

On September 30th 25230 worked the 17.15 Dundee - Perth.

The 10.44 Glasgow Queen Street - Dundee on October 11th was worked by 25230.

On November 1st 25230 worked the 11.05 Perth - Edinburgh and the 1P10 12.48 Edinburgh - Perth.

Having spent a considerable time allocated to the Scottish Region, it was to be expected that 7580/25230 covered many miles on the Region's passenger services. Possibly its longest recorded daily working occurred November 4th 1980 when, with 25062 it worked the 08.15 Inverness - Glasgow (181 miles) and then returned north with the return 13.10 to Inverness.
